Many hearing impaired persons have a TDD (Telecommunicating Device for the Deaf), a keyboard hooked into a telephone. They simply type instead of talk. The 911 dispatchers also have a TDD and can type back to the caller. HOW CAN CALLERS WHO DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH USE 911? The E-911 Center uses the "Language Line," a service to provide a translator for the language needed. The translator will stay on the line throughout the call to relay information between the caller and the dispatcher. This service is paid for by the city of Roanoke.
